Dr James Opperman

The Early Years

James grew up in the Sutherland Shire and as the eldest of eight children he was surrounded by younger siblings, kindling his future interest in Obstetrics. He studied medicine at Sydney University and graduated with Honours in 1989.

Specialist training and working abroad

James undertook specialist training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where he was awarded the F.J. Browne Medal in 1996 for first place in the membership exam for The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. He was then appointed Senior Registrar at St Mary’s Hospital in London where he worked in the High Risk Obstetric Unit with interests in high blood pressure in pregnancy, gestational diabetes, and thyroid issues in pregnancy.

Obstetric Practice

James established his practice at Hurstville Private in 1999 with consulting rooms on site. Since then James has delivered over 6000 babies. James is a Visiting Medical Officer at St George Public Hospital.

Professional Roles

James is involved in training Medical Students from the University of NSW in their final years. From 2017 to 2021, he was a sitting Member of the Medical Tribunal of NSW.

Personal

James lives close by Hurstville Private with his family. He is passionate about the outdoors, and lives an active life.  Amongst his achievements are:

  • 1998 London Marathon
  • 2000 Sydney Marathon
  • 5 Oxfam 100km Trailwalker events with family and friends, fundraising and achieving a best place of 2nd overall
  • 2013 Western States 100 Mile run in USA across the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Placed 1st amongst Australian entrants in a time of 22.5 hours
  • Kokoda Trail with family and friends
  • Ultra-trail Australia 50km and 100km events
  • Multiple 6 Foot Track Marathons
  • Motatapu and Tarawera 100km events in New Zealand
  • Currently taking a keen interest in swimming and enjoying open water swims both at home and abroad
